Now Practice Now 2019

Architecture practice now faces significant challenges. Changes in technology, production, and collaboration are altering traditional modes of working. The NOW PRACTICE NOW workshops explore the means and methods of transforming practice. Join us as we dive deeper into trends that emerged from the Now Practice Now inaugural series last year. Hear from featured guests at the roundtable and join in the discussion as we focus on measurable ways to expand architecture’s value. To provide inclusive opportunities for participation in 2019, we will be leveraging technology to bring the conversation to you.

The BSA Membership Committee invites you to join us for a series of candid and convivial discussions about where the practice is now and where it is going.

WORKSHOPS will be round table conversations with substantial Q&A, focused on three important aspects of practice:

Now Practice Now—CASH: What is architecture’s value? | Thursday, May 23, 2:00-3:00 pm | Webinar
How can architecture’s value be expanded using design, data, and social performance? What are ways that technology, computation, research, and mission can enhance a firm’s value. Understand how expanding or repackaging architects’ design services can impact methods of compensation, moving away from being a commodity industry toward one of bespoke value. How can we balance roles of design, data, and gathering of user/community feedback in order to measure performance and realized value of design expertise?

Now Practice Now—STUFF: What are we making? Why are we making it? | June 2019
Technology and big data are transforming the design industry. From clients demanding more data on new building technologies, to a deeper understanding of how data is influencing our cities, this panel will engage in lively discussion around how designers are using these trends to re-shape our communities and the future of architectural engagement

Now Practice Now—TURF: Where do we work? How do we work? | September 2019
What new realms are we practicing in? From research to fabrication, strategy to social equity, the scope of architectural practice is expanding to encompass new areas. How does this enhance the design process? What is the value added? What is the benefit of in-house verse out-of-house expertise?

Now Practice Now—ABX: Join us at ABX 2019 in November to hear outcomes and trends from the workshop and contribute to the conversation in an interactive installation.
